Our New Club's First Meeting

The kids have been going to AWANA cubbies for a couple of years now and have really enjoyed their time there. They learn Bible verses, sing songs, do crafts, and play games. Here they are at the awards ceremony.

While cubbies has been good, we're not sure if we are going to continue in the AWANA program for a couple reasons. First, Wednesday nights are really tough on us since Don is not home from school yet and I'm going crazy trying to get the kids fed, uniformed, presentable, and agreeable. Second, we're not as excited about the Sparks class that Lydia will be moving into next year. It's a little more wild and crazy than Cubbies. We're not sure that she will do as well in it, and we don't want her picking up some of the habits of the older kids that we see.

So I decided to start looking into other options. I came across several: Boy/Girl Scouts, Pioneer Clubs, Heritage Girls, etc. We decided to try starting our own version of one called Keepers of the Faith. We had our first official club meeting last night. We are currently working on four awards.
  1. Bible memory: books of the Bible
  2. Bible reading: Galatians
  3. Jesus loves me: learning all the verses to the song
  4. Camping
The camping one fit in well, since we're planning to go camping for Father's Day. The kids started by drawing picture lists of all the things we need to pack for a camping trip while the grownups made a word list. Next week we'll set up the tent and start actually packing.

I'm not sure we'll stick with Keepers Club, but I think it will be a fun summer family night activity for us to try out. We are looking forward to trying all sorts of awards. We'll try to keep you posted as we work our way through more.
